JSW MG Motor India to Set Up Second Unit at Halol, Gujarat with ₹3,000 Crore Investment
In a major boost to India’s electric mobility ambitions, JSW MG Motor India has announced a ₹3,000 crore investment to establish a second manufacturing unit at Halol in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district. The new facility will be built adjacent to the company’s existing plant, significantly enhancing its production capabilities and reinforcing Gujarat’s position as a growing EV hub.
Massive Capacity Expansion
The expansion will scale up production capacity from the current ~1–1.2 lakh units annually to nearly 3 lakh vehicles per year. This move comes at a time when demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) is accelerating in India.
With this expansion, Halol is set to become one of the most strategically important automotive manufacturing clusters in western India.
75–80% Focus on New Energy Vehicles
A key highlight of the project is its strong emphasis on sustainability. Nearly 75–80% of the total production from the new unit will be dedicated to New Energy Vehicles, including electric cars.
This aligns with:
India’s national EV adoption goals
State-level EV policies in Gujarat
The global shift toward cleaner mobility
The move positions the company as a serious contender in India’s fast-growing EV segment.
Integrated Battery Assembly Facility
The new plant will feature an integrated in-house battery assembly unit. This is a strategic step that:
Reduces dependence on imports
Improves supply chain efficiency
Lowers production costs
Enhances localization
Battery localization is crucial for making EVs more affordable and competitive in the Indian market.
Advanced AI & Digital Twin Technology
The facility will deploy advanced Artificial Intelligence systems and digital twin technology in manufacturing operations.
Digital twin technology allows:
Real-time monitoring of production lines
Predictive maintenance
Improved efficiency
Reduced downtime
This will make the Halol facility one of the more technologically advanced automotive plants in India.
Strengthening Gujarat as an EV Hub
Gujarat has been aggressively promoting electric vehicle manufacturing through incentives, infrastructure support, and policy clarity. With this investment:
Halol emerges as a key EV manufacturing cluster
Employment generation is expected to rise significantly
Ancillary industries and MSMEs are likely to benefit
The expansion further cements Gujarat’s position as a preferred destination for automotive and EV investments.
Strategic Significance for India
This ₹3,000 crore investment is not just a company expansion—it reflects a broader transformation in India’s automotive sector:
Shift from ICE vehicles to NEVs
Increased domestic manufacturing
Greater technology integration
Enhanced global competitiveness
As India aims to become a global EV manufacturing hub, projects like the Halol expansion play a pivotal role in achieving that vision
